What is PHS?

Find out more about GCT's PHS RF CMOS transceivers
PHS stands for "Personal Handyphone System" and was developed in Japan in 1989 as a cordless telecommunication system operating within the band 1895MHz to 1918MHz. The aim was to provide cordless access to the PSTN and thus had similar operating characteristics to cellular systems. Today PHS is growing rapidly, with over 95 million subscribers.

PHS is able to operate not only as a cordless telephone, but as an outdoor public mobile communication system or transceiver. A main benefit to this technology is that a single PHS terminal can be used as a home telephone, an internal telephone in the office, and a mobile telephone out of doors, resulting in a seamless communication environment. Furthermore, PHS is utilized as WLL/FWA (Wireless Local Loop/Fixed Wireless Access), and can support any kind of system. However, at present, its main use is outdoor public mobile communication.
